What tuners do you have?

I still listen to FM and have several tuners, four in systems and a few spares.
The Onkyo T-9 (I have two) is simply the best *sounding* tuner I've heard. The Onkyo T-4090, the follow-up to the T-9 is also great sounding.
The Technics ST-8080 is also a very fine tuner with a great sound. It was included in the TIC shootouts, and placed about 49th out of 100+ tuners. It compared well to the top tuners in sound quality, though. It is a 4-ganger but does pull in stations very well in my listening area, so some lack of DX ability doesn't mean anything to me.
I also have two Yamaha T-80s. The T-80 is also a great sounding tuner. It also DXs very well.
LOL right now I have stereo stereos playing. Listening to the T-80 up here, and have a T-9 playing down in the family room. The station is the local NPR and I'm listening to the classical morning concert program.

My favorite is the Sansui TU-717

I gave away my second favorite, to a good friend- a Technics 7600- close relative to the excellent 8600

I've got a Kenwood KT-7500, awaiting mods.

I've got a Kenwood KT-5500, looking for a home.

I've got a Pioneer 608- a black dial version of the 6800- fate unknown.

Rotel RT-2100 (1979, $600 or $640 )
The scarce RT-2100 is a 5-gang, rack-mount, FM-only analog tuner with excellent sensitivity. It has wide and narrow IF bandwidth settings, a multipath meter, some sort of quartz lock tuning circuitry, an output level control and recording check switch. It can have either a black or silver case and has a digital readout as well as an analog dial. The RT-2100 usually sells for $150-305 on eBay, with a low of $99 in 11/03. I got mine in absolutely mint condition for roughly $120 + shipping a few months back.

The T-5000 has a real resemblance to my T-9.

How right you are! I was lucky enough to find one of these in great shape at a very reasonable price in 2005 and it's the best I've ever used. My outdoor antenna with a rotator is a great help in picking out distant stations, but that's the icing on the cake.

I have a Kenwood KT-7550, and a tubed Sansui, TU-70. But my favorite tuner is my Marantz 2130!

I have Nikkos. A Gamma1 and a Gamma30. I bought the Gamma 30 to listen to AM, but it doesnt work well with a passive pre-amp. It's in beautiful shape, like new out of the box. The Gamma 1 has a perfect face, the top is a little ugly...but then again it's got that diagram on top from the factory. Beautiful sounding tuner. I suppose I could do better, but really don't see the need to do so. Actually no tuner is installed in my system at the time. Haven't had one in for months. Really don't listen to the radio, and there is no room in the rack for one. I really need a new rack.

I have yet to listen to a tuner that sounds good through a passive pre.

IMO, passive pres are alright for CD, with their standard 2volt output level, but much less suited to tuners and cassette decks, especially older ones with lower output levels.

I still own a very nice passive pre, with an active MM tube phono section that was tailor made for my Sumiko Blue Point Special high output MC cartridge, high quality, low loss Sonic Frontiers stepped attenuator for volume control, very good parts, the works, but all the tuners I tried with it sound aneimic and lacking impact, even on good FM signals.
