Well for the last 5 months or so I have been trying other non-horn speakers and have found some nice ones but I miss the horns so Instead of putting my VOTT Altec's with 511B horns I moved these babies in. Here's the story.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...49480&rd=1&rd=1 After a 7 hour non stop round trip the gear is home. I about SH*T myself when I saw the horns. I knew they were big but when you try and lift them...... The cabinets have tags on the back of them from Altec dating 3-5-51 and the 803a's look brand new! The 288c drivers weigh more than my 511b horns and are marked 24ohms. The tar filled horns are Altec 1003B's and probably weigh a good 150 lbs each at least. The LX5 x-overs look fine as well. I'm not sure how I'm gonna hook these up and I need to do some reading to see about correct ohm loads I guess. I have some Cary amps that I can set at 4,8,and 16 ohms but I'm not sure yet. The picture looks a bit deceiving as the room looks small but those horns are over 3 feet wide.I got the horns hooked up using the LX5 x-overs. Heres some specs. They are 10ft apart (for now) I might move them into the big room (24x20) but I wanted to hear them. They are 46" high to the top of the horns. I must say they sound pretty nice but I will have a real good listen Sunday evening. Anyway heres a crappy cell phone pic for now. I really like the tar horns as they are totally dead unlike my 511B horns that ring. BTW I'm running them with 25-35 watts of SET power (Cary 805 amps) This post has been edited by charlieboy on July 08, 2007 11:30 am -------------------- STUFF!!!!

Charlie,
I´m not sure, but I´d guess those 816 bass cabinets won´t go as low as the 828s used on the A5 and A7 models. Those 1003 horns are the stuff dreams are made of. I know little about the 299 drivers, but I´d say they are probably in the same league. I was wondering if you could try a combination of the 828 bass cabinets from your A/7s with those 1003 horns? You could probably use the LX5 crossovers to great effect. $500 for that pair of speakers is obscene. Jorge P.S. - I´m really sorry I don´t live closer to you. |

The link works now. Nice setup.
I am, however a little disappointed. You must have come up 99 or 5 to get to them, which meant you drove within eyesight of my place and didn't stop. Next time. -------------------- IN ORDER TO BE OLD AND WISE, YOU MUST FIRST BE YOUNG AND STUPID

It is too bad we are so far away it would be nice to have someone with the same hobby/obsession to hang out with. As far as the price I think I got very lucky because there was no mention of the word Altec or 288c or 803a in the ad's title so it never turned up in a search for those keywords. Your right I had someone email me already offering 800 bucks just for the horns with no drivers. I'm keeping these as well as my VOTT cabinets with my 511B horns and moded 902B drivers. I was thinking of modding my VOTT cabinets like many people do shrinking the port in size at the bottom to improve lower end preformance and trying them with the horns as you mentioned. -------------------- STUFF!!!!

Ah, so those are 288c, not 299 as you stated in your previous post. That, I believe, is the more commom 1.4" driver used on the bigger midrange horns.
Have you ever heard about Jean Hiraga´s crossover mods for VOTT´s? I understand they turn the VOTTs into much more domestically acceptable type of speaker, for the originals are really designed for much larger places ( and listening distance ) than your average listening room. As for your 511B cast metal horns, you can dampen them to great effect to. What this does is to make them look bad, in most cases. I´d love to try a bi-amped VOTT A7 with an active crossover, EL-34 based tube amp for bass, and single ended 2A3´s or 300Bs on the horns.( Dream on, Jorge, dream on...) Jorge |

Where are you located? I had no idea you were close by. I took the 99 most of the way then I forgot what it turns into but I went up through Livermore and that area. You must not be too far away, come on down. Charlie -------------------- STUFF!!!!

I'm in Tracy. You came up 99, then took the 120 bypass, then on 5 for about 2 miles, and then took the 205 to Livermore. You were within a mile of my place. -------------------- IN ORDER TO BE OLD AND WISE, YOU MUST FIRST BE YOUNG AND STUPID

This is what I found in the inumerable links that come up when you Google "Jean Hiraga". I have a few issues of Sound practices Magazine, but I doubt I have the one with that article. I´ll have a look and get back to you.I have read it, somewhere, though. At one time there was a CD available with all issues of SP. I wish I had gotten one. Jorge |
