very nice, the molding is outstanding! i was worried for a minute until i realized that you must be wallpapering or doing something other than paint the walls.

You are correct, no paint or wallpaper, which means that the finish quality of the drywall is not that important. Instead the walls and ceiling will be treated with DYI acoustic panels covered in cloth. The front will be the live end, i.e. only slighty absorbant. The sides will be most absorbant, and the rear of the room will be in between the two, but also include some items to add diffraction. The ceiling will be covered with DYI acoustic tiles similiar to the ones discussed in this thread: Fabric Frames Depending how things sound, I may also build bass traps hidden behind the sides of the "stage". While I am not 100% decided on all of the details of these room treatments, I am getting closer to finalizing my plans. Not even close Unfortunately there just isn't enough time in the day. I did get the wall mounts for my surround and rear speakers put up, and was putting some stain on the molding just this morning, but overall progress has been slow. I am also trying to get the room next to the listening room finished so that it won't be necessary to walk through unfinished basement to get to the listening room. After I get some more staining finished I will post some pictures of my progress, including the speaker mounts, which I am very happy with. After what seems like a small eternity, the holiday season has brought me one of the greatest gifts there is... some FREE TIME!!! I have spent this time continuing the slow process of completing my listening room/home theater.
My brother-in-law was in town for Thanksgiving and our goal was to finish up the molding along the back wall. I first had to get a few remaining cables up in the ceiling and close it up. I then served as gopher for my brother-in-law as he worked his crown-molding magic. I was then ready to build the cabinet at the rear of the room which will hold all of the home theater equipment. A few vacation days before Christmas provided the opportunity. The cabinet is not 100% complete. Items left to complete are a drop-ceiling like top with vents which will allow heat to escape, woodframed glass doors for the bottom section, and finishing trim on all of the shelves. Trim to cover the area where the wall and cabinet meet must also be finished. This trim will actually attach to the wall with speaker grill attchments. When it is removed it will allow the shelves in the top part of the cabinet to slide out. I have attached a few pictures of my progress. The equipment is fully functional although power has not yet been hooked up to the room. Extension cords are allowing us to watch a few movies, and the result is... The room does suffer from echo, which is no surprise given the lack of any carpet or other acoustic treatments. Intrestingly it is far more noticable on music than movies. The good news is that it can only get better. You will also see the rear channel speakers mounted on the wall. The surround and rear speakers are actually mounted upside-down. This allows me to mount the speakers up high enough that they are not as intrusive, but keeps the tweeters as low as possible so that the sound doesn't all pass overhead. My goal for the remainder of my vacation is to get as much staining finished as possible. I am finally starting to feel like I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. While I still have a lot left to do, it is starting to come together just like envisioned it. I just noticed the date of my last thread to this post and am shocked by how little progress I have made over the last 10 months. Life certainly has a way of getting in the way of things.
Fortunately over the last few weeks I have been able to get some work done. I now have the doors installed, which means that I could also finish up the base boards (the door frames had to be in first). I have also completed the "stage" at the front of the room. My list of remaing to-do's looks something like this... 1. finish staining the shelves for the equipment rack. 2. install electrical outlets, switches, etc. 3. curtains for the stage 4. acoustic treatments for side (absorbers) and rear (diffusers) walls. 5. acoustic treatments for ceiling (combination of absorbers and diffusers) 6. bass traps for the front corners of the stage 7. carpet Although that list represents quite a bit of remaing work, there truly does seem to be some light at the end of the tunnel, and I am now very hopeful to be finish with this project by the end of the year.
