I'm sure those are great but man just looking at them makes me think of a smeared image, phase issues and cancellations everywhere.

I had a pair of Polk Audio SDA-1C back in the early 90's. I remember the SDA effect being a truly noticable improvement, BUT... you definitely had to be in the sweet spot, EXACTLY centered between the two speakers. Sure, the soundstage goes to crap on any system if you aren't reasonably centered between the two speakers, but on the SDA series there was little margin for error. However, if you can setup your listening room to accommodate the ideal position, then the SDAs are still worth it IMO.
