From Hearst Electronic Products, we can see some audiophile interesting components:

http://www2.electronicproducts.com/Sony_Pl...de_text-10.aspx

....and just to mention a few: wink.gif

Elna, Panasonic, NEC Tantalum Ultra Low ESR caps, Vishay resistors, Schottky Diodes, clock signal generating by Crystal-33.8688MHz, four Analog Devices AD5660CRM-3 Dac chips, Cirrus Logic CS4351-CZZ Dac - 192kHz Stereo, and a lot of other good audiophile stuff.

No wonder if it sounds so good even in two channel audio. smile.gif

Also, i wonder what Sony is thinking by discontinuing their best ps3 unit. user posted image

Comparative two channel audio test.

After a few days listening to Sony PS3 60GB, here's a comparative resume test i've made with my cdp Nad C521BEE:

PS3

More detail and depth also better stereo channel separation.
Incredible note's decay, sparkling mids and velvet highs.
A smooth/relaxed sound but, a little analytic.

A good source for classic/acoustic/vocals oriented sounds.

Nad C521BEE

More presence and dynamics with an extensive and tense mid/low freqs.
A more live up front organic soundstage.

A good source for blues/jazz/rock oriented sounds.

Audio Components used in this sound test:

Amp: Aria mini (integrate push-pull tube amp)

Speakers: Paradigm Reference Studio 20 (v1)

Interconnects: Supra 25th Anniversary Limited Edition

Power Cables: Supra LoRad

Speaker Cables: Nordost Super Flatline MkII

Music:

Elvis Costello – Get Happy......( for testing rhythm and dynamics)
Bjork – Debut........................( for testing vocal, electronic beats and low end)
BRMC – Baby 81....................( testing pace, rock sounds presence and attack)
Miles Davis – On The Corner...( testing dynamics, mids/high freqs)
Beck – Mutations....................( testing acoustic sounds and detail)
Yes – Fragile..........................( testing vocals, and music complexity)
Berlioz – Symphonie Fantastique.( testing depth/detail and soundstage)

Note:
The Nad cdp is heavily moded and the PS3 is the discontinued 60GB model but the sound components remains the same in the actual models, 40GB and 80GB.

did your friend who loaned you the ps3 know that you stripped it down to bare bones?
btw I had heard that the old ps1's were good transports. it makes sense that the ps3 is every bit as good or better.

I have think about it... but i have not the guts to openned it. soundt/eek4.gif
I borrowed the pics from a friend in another forum. wink.gif

I have a PS1 and the sound is just crap. I think i'd made a post in ST concerning that subject. Some guys said that one or two models with specific serial numbers have indeed a good sound, the rest are crap. Sound wise, i mean. biggrin.gif

But, yes this PS3 really is a big surprize. Incredible piece of technology with a great 2 channel audio sound.

that is surprising. i would not have thought that the PS3 could compete with a modded NAD BEE.

I'm guessing it might have to do with having somewhat quality components to run all that High Definition video and High def sound.

Imho, i think it can compete with almost any cdp between 500 to 1000€. The same with my modded Nad smile.gif
Also remember that between an incredible number of functions it can also read SA CD, all kind of compressed music files and BluRay discs. wink.gif

Adding to all that PS3 also have electronic audiophile components, like i'd posted above and Elroy had mention.

One more thing:
This was not a blind test but almost..., because i have no tabus concerning audio, when i'm listen to something i only listen with my ears and my body, never with my eyes. I think you know what i mean.... wink.gif
Even the other day i was reading in another forum a comparative test between the PS3 and a Lyngdorf cdp ohmy.gif and the guy only said bad things about the PS3......but, imo for all the wrong reasons... biggrin.gif I think he was listening to the brands not the sound coming from the speakers.
I'm not stupid enough to try compare a 2.400€ cdp with a 600,00€ multimedia device...user posted image

It's indeed a very surprising unit this PS3.
