I am new to the group, and I need a little advice from some of the wise old members. I noticed in the thread about tuners that no one mentioned Dynakits. Even tho that leads me to assume they ain't so hot, I still want to buy one to go with a PAS 3x and ST 70 I own.
Looking on eBay, I see the 3s seem to sell for considerably more than the 5s. Odd, me thinks, since the 5 has a lot more bells and whistles. Can some Dyna expert please educate me? |

I sold both FM-3 and FM-5 tuners and can state that the FM-5 is far and away the better product. Why the FM-3's are selling for higher prices is likely due to nostalgia than anything that pertains to performance.
But..... There are better tuners out there. I'd suggest looking at a used Parasound T/DQ-1600 for starters. I have one and am very satisfied with it, and it also received a Stereophile "Class C" recommendation. Just a suggestion... -------------------- "Official" licensed, resident grouser. So there.

fm5 better than the fm3? as far as the fm5 goes i have never read anything good about it anywhere on the net or heard of anyone using one.i cant dispute your claims with the fm5 as i have never heard one but i can chime in on the fm3. the fm 3 is actually a very nice sounding tube tuner and can be aligned by anyone with simple tools.i will give you it's not the most sensitive tuner out there and wont win any awards for dx'ing it will do just fine for local stations with a half decent antenna.as for the nostalgia on the fm3 it still routinely sells for $75+ which is a great bargain for a tube tuner and if you find one loaded with original tubes for that price you've hit pay dirt |
