when you were young, I would guess that your mom would make something that you just loved what was it?
I loved fried potatoes with onion and hotdogs sliced up in it. my mom used to make that once in a while. I made it last night for my boys for the first time, my youngest loved it, he got in trouble earlier in the day and was sucking my ass, and the oldest didnt really care. but I loved it, I just had the leftovers a couple minutes ago for breakfast. elroy -------------------- I got nothing

Can't say I cared for mom's cooking that much, mostly because she cooked the way dad liked it.
However, her turkey, stuffing, and gravy were to die for. I very carefully took notes on how she did it and can pretty much duplicate it myself now. Will pass it on to my kids, too. They love it. -------------------- IN ORDER TO BE OLD AND WISE, YOU MUST FIRST BE YOUNG AND STUPID

I feel the same way. My dad loved a wierd slant toward boring and bland overcooked food, and as a result there is nothing my mom cooks that I can honestly say I look forward to. In fact, as a kid my favorite meal was a particular kind of frozen pizza from Winn Dixie. On the other hand my wife is a FABULOUS cook. It is not that she is particularly creative herself, rather that she has an knack for following a recipe and consistently preparing food that looks and tastes exactly like you expect from the photo. This is a skill that is not nearly as easy as it sounds, as I have proven time again with many of my own disastrous attempts. I think I posted it there last year, but I'll check. If not, I'll do it. Nothing elaborate, no fruits or nuts, just good. -------------------- IN ORDER TO BE OLD AND WISE, YOU MUST FIRST BE YOUNG AND STUPID

hamburger on a plate with dark gravy, canned peas, a slab of salted butter, and instant mashed potatoes.
But her better cooking was a nice spaghetti sauce. -------------------- What you got back home, lil' sister, to play yer fuzzy warbles on? Pitiful, portable picnic players? Come with uncle & hear all proper! Hear angels trumpets & devils trombones. You are invited!

My mom recently acknowledged that she was making gravy completely wrong for about, oh, 40 years or so.
Other than that I liked her cooking. It was fun when we had breakfast for dinner on occasion, just out of the blue. My mom was ahead of her time (and of course was accused of being a lousy mother) because she was successful in the workplace a long time ago. It's all subjective. I'm with youse guys, in that I like diverse, flavorful, adventurous cuisine. My ex-GF was a gourmet cook, which I appreciated. However, her sister's family HATES the way she cooks, and wants beef and potatoes. They took a spectacular cut of prime rib and cooked it to the whole range of brown and gray. argh. It's a source of great friction, or at least it was, but it's not my problem anymore, if it ever was on any level. -------------------- Can't you hear the thunder?
Someone stole my watch. Sold a quart of blood and bought a half a pint of scotch. With a pint of green Chartreuse, ain't nothin' seems right. You buy the Sunday paper on a Saturday night. |

Spaghetti with chunks (legs, breasts, etc) of chicken that had been slow cooked with tomato, onion, garlic, etc for hours. Mmmm...
