i aquired this 1988 TOTL $2000.00 CDP from a fellow in california for $25.00 with remote and manual in non-functional condition. many of PIONEER's late 80's CDPs, both single disc and six-disc magazine types, low end and high alike, suffered an issue with substandard adhesive holding the laser pick-up's lens in place. the adhesive would fail after a few years, and the lens would either fly off during the pick-up's slewing actions, or fall off, in the case of the upside-down mounted magazine models' pick-ups. this is what my PD-91 suffered. strangely, the lens was no where to be found in the chassis. i went ahead and robbed a lens off a dead KENWOOD portable i found at a yard sale years back, and fitted it in place. it fit like hand and glove!! TRACE dots of LOCTITE super glue around the circumference held it fast with no fogging afteraffects. it wouldn't work. a friend suggested twiddling the series of seven VRs on the pick-up control board directly aft of the transport assembly. i did so, and aft er 30 minutes of semi-organized experementation, i had the deck playing factory CDs!! another 30 minutes/less of fine tuning, and it was playing CD-Rs without a hitch!! it serves me well to this day. i am so very proud of this CDP. my very favorite CD player, restored to full function by my own hand! smile.gif

Very nice player. Does it feature the stable platter platform? That platform was used in EAD and Theta cdps as well- borrowed right from Pioneer. The other innovative platform from pioneer is a type of air-lock platform, used on models post the period of the stable platter darlings.

I own a Pioneer Elite PD-65 and find it a great player, including it's interesting Legato Link sound processing.

no, it does not use the stable platter design of the 1990s. it is a conventionally oriented tray loader, as you can see. i prefer it that way; this baby has beautiful looks and sound that i'm totally satisfied with, and is the only TOTL REFERENCE PIONEER CDP ever made with the traditional 1980's CDP look, which is one of the defining aspects of a classic CDP, IMO. i do not personally care for the mid-mount design of the ninties that dominated everything, from CDPs to VCRs. mid mount or no, this CDP is one of the most formidable CDP designs ever conceived, with an elaborate clamping-stabilzation mechanism and a magnetic linear rail pick-up transport mechanism that endows the player the ability to read, synchronize, play and slew between tracks virtually any CD/CD-R that enters it within a mean average access time of 0.5 seconds/less!! let me reiterate that there is NO MECHANICAL DRIVE in the linear transport! the pick up moves along it's travel via ELECTROMAGNETIC REACTION that is totally silent, and FAR faster than any mechanical drive!!!! bless PIONEER's heart; they stuck with this deck's pick-up assembly for all their TOTL CDPs from the 1987 debut of this model, straight to whatever TOTL CDP they're marketing in japan at present, the pick-up being STILL IN PRODUCTION and currently AVAILABLE from PIONEER's U.S. parts service!!!! despite this CDP's seeming complexity, it is quite literally the easiest thing to service!! PIONEER will forever retain my utmost respect for producing such an elegant design, crafted to last the decades, and also as they're just about the only mainstream japanese consumer electronics company left that still so openly supports the vast history of fine products they have produced. therefore, IMO, TOTL PIONEER CDPs, most especially this PD-91, have everything going for them to make them the most desirable vintage high-end Compact Disc Players in existence. no wonder this CDP is so hard to come by! only the most persnickety golden ears, that desire the absolute bleeding edge in CDP sound ever let examples of this CDP go! and i cannot imagine why, either. an all CLASS-A output stage provides a warm tonal character that's far preferable, IMO, to the more accurate, but rather shrill tonal character of the current state of the art. i guess i'm not so much of a true audiophile, as i prefer romantic epiphany over clinical accuracy...

here's an excellent example of just how stratospherically far above the PD-91 is to every other CDP PIONEER made at the time. this is the PD-7100, the TOTL standard line model from the same production year as the PD-91:

truly, as nice as it is, it is clearly a total POS from the inside when compared directly to the PD-91. irrefutable proof that the 91 stands on it's own in the long history of PIONEER ELECTRONIC CORPORATION's fine products...

some comparison shots of of the JPN market version, the PD-3000:

the primary differences consist of a solid aluminum top plate in lieu of the PIONEER standard, ribbed sheet metal bonnet, a very different main board design, two independent outboard power transformers, one for ANALOG, one for DIGITAL, in lieu of the single large outboard transformer of the PD-91, a chrome ringed isolator supporting the solid aluminum transformer cradle rather than the smaller, solid black one, a much thicker power cable, and finally, a blue shaded FL display rather than the PIONEER U.S. standard amber shading. why did PIONEER choose to do this? my only logical guess is that they sold the U.S. PD-91 version here for less than what they MSRPed the JPN PD-3000 version for, probably to supposedly enhance it's competitiveness in the more competitive (at the time, anyway) U.S. market. though it seems to me that such a obviously superlative compact disc player would have sold just as well to the well-heeled american audiophile with those extra niceties and their attendant price increase retained. after all, it seems to me that PIONEER, at the time, at least, had massive market-share, second only to SONY. well, i suppose PIONEER's U.S. divisions' bean counters always have been a little on the nutty side...

i've got a bead on a mint PD-3000 with a faulty pick-up. there is a very good chance that i'll be getting it to replace the fully functional, but cosmetically worn PD-91 i currently own. this will be the ultimate, perfect version of my very favorite CDP!! if it's laser problem is a loose lens, i'll simply put a new lens on it, like i did with the 91. if i am unable to do that, then i'll just pull the transport assembly from my 91 and place it in the 3000, yeilding an instantly fully-functional player! this will also allow me to use the extra set of large PIONEER isolation feet gleaned from the 91 for my 1988 PIONEER GR-777 graphic EQ! my system is looking to turn out far better than i ever dared dream!! laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif

i aquired this 1988 TOTL $2000.00 CDP from a fellow in california for $25.00 with remote and manual in non-functional condition. many of PIONEER's late 80's CDPs, both single disc and six-disc magazine types, low end and high alike, suffered an issue with substandard adhesive holding the laser pick-up's lens in place. the adhesive would fail after a few years, and the lens would either fly off during the pick-up's slewing actions, or fall off, in the case of the upside-down mounted magazine models' pick-ups. this is what my PD-91 suffered. strangely, the lens was no where to be found in the chassis. i went ahead and robbed a lens off a dead KENWOOD portable i found at a yard sale years back, and fitted it in place. it fit like hand and glove!! TRACE dots of LOCTITE super glue around the circumference held it fast with no fogging afteraffects. it wouldn't work. a friend suggested twiddling the series of seven VRs on the pick-up control board directly aft of the transport assembly. i did so, and aft er 30 minutes of semi-organized experementation, i had the deck playing factory CDs!! another 30 minutes/less of fine tuning, and it was playing CD-Rs without a hitch!! it serves me well to this day. i am so very proud of this CDP. my very favorite CD player, restored to full function by my own hand! smile.gif

MacGyver , can you help another fan of PD-91?
I've bought this unit from a friend and it won't play burned discs , just factory.
Can you help me with some walkthrough or some tip what can i do to make it read burned discs. soundt/confused-smiley-013.gif

Thanks in advance

Thanks in advance

there are several variable pots on the transport control board, directly behind the transport itself. those control the LD pickup, focus, tracking, gain and so on. i was able to get the PD-91 i once had running by A: replacing the missing laser lens, and B: adjusting those pots until it started spinning up, attempting to read, and then finally syncing up and playing a factory disc. it is important to first dial it in with a factory disc; once it is playing, fast scanning forward/back, and track skipping, you can then put in a CD-R RECORDED AT 8x OR LESS, PREFERABLY 4x, and massage it to the point where it is reading those CD-Rs as effertlessly as a factory disc. the PD-91 is world class, and the still better japanese market PD-3000 version is in a class of it's own, IMO. i hate myself for frying my poor physical condition, but flawlessly functional PD-91 that i got for $25.00 from a fellow up in CALI because it was missing it's laser lens. there was a rash of defective PIONEER LD pickups in 1987/88, in many single disc and multi disc CDPs. it pains me to think of how many perfectly good CDPs were likely thrown out long before their time due to this manufacturing gaffe. anyway, i fried my PD-91 in a stupid attempted mod. the only thing that assuages the pain of it is my ownership of the JPN PD-3000, a cosmetically like new, but non-functional example. i plan to soon take it in to a tech in PORTLAND, and get it refurbished, no expense spared. i got it by a freak, chance encounter on EBAY, without remote and manual. fortunately, i have the PD-91 remote and manual, so when it finally gets fixed, i'll be all set. until that wonderful day, she sleeps up top my bookshelf, pretty, yet benign:
