its a way better birthday present than when I turned 13 and got an empty guitar case. Not that I am still holding on to my 13th birthday. cant wait to get it all fired up and rolling here in a couple hours.

From a magazine:

"The X 2000 is the elder brother of the X 1000 R, but nearly in everything a lot better. It's a machine to have pure fun and a lot of quality. The Revox PR 99 on the opposite ist a lot more puristic and maybe a little bit better. This is a r2r deck that goes for the higher quality in the consumer market, the top and the last model of Teac. There had been 3 types: the R-type with 6 heads and autoreverse play, the type without any character 4 tracks and 3 heads and the M-type with 3 half track heads and 38 cm/s - 'M' stands for 'Master'. Usually Teacs builds his machines modular i.e. the rollers of the X-7 are the same as in the X-10 and same goes to many parts. But not in this top model: the instruments are shining green, the pointer is upsidedown, different switches and buttons. If you switch on the dbx fucntion the logo will shine green too. There were 2 different dbx used: dbx I and dbx II. Teac uses Cobalt heads (CA) which should be very 'long life'. I'm not quiet sure but I guess those heads were build by Bogen and maybe they are the same as in the big Technics'. The heads were mounted 'half rigid'. With this new construction you can resign the springs. The Teac 1000 and 2000 are able to use EE tapes. The 2000 got a computer driven COMPUMATIC search system: 5 digit realtime/length counter, automatic search counter or cue position, block repeat, rec mute and synchro copy. Technical details: 3 DC motors, 0,03% flutter, 30 - 40.000 Hz (40 - 33.000 at +- 3dB), signal-to-noise ratio > 100 dB when using dbx, 25 kg with wooden case (=4 kg). The front is made of 5 mm alu die casting."

Its dead, I think it sat too long. I think when the capstans start spining, it sounds like a fan spinning with a small piece of paper hitting the blades, it fast forwards and rewinds, it just wont play the tape, guess letting it sit in a cold garage for 15 years took its toll.

I remember reading a few threads on TH, and some of the guys there were saying that there is a way to lubricate the capstan motors or something like that, "I think those are the pointy things"

I am not in a hurry, dont want to spend any money right now, just got done with xmas presents for the kids. so I will use it for a talking piece till after the first of the year, then I will get down to business and figure it out.

Getting it serviced is a good idea. That is a very sweet R2R. Here's a link to some info on it on The Vintage Knob.
