Over the weekend I had the privilege of auditioning an older version of the Snell C7. They are tower designs with a pair of polyprolene mids, single forward firing Titanium tweeter, single rear firing tweeter, and inward firing woofers ala the AR9. In fact, the Snells have a lot in common with the AR9 except the rock and roll sound.
I found the Snells to be very smooth in the mid range, which is a result of the polyprolene cones. Midrange vocals were very smooth. I found the highs to be nicely overlaid. I found the bass to be powerful enough but not as finely resolved as I like. The bass lacks the immediacy and impact because on-axis focus is impossible. Reflections are inevitable, which leads to loss of resolution. I wouldn't call it boomy, the Snells are acoustic. Overall, I found the Snells to have a relaxed, laid back sound. While they do not deliver the last bit of resolution, that in no way affects the overall balance of the sound package. For smooth easy listening, these Snells fit the bill. |

Nice review, Sam.
There are a whole bunch of speakers I have only heard of, but not heard, including Wharfedale, a pair of which I recently picked up. I have some AR9s at my former GF's and will be redoing them soon, I hope. I'll keep my eyes (and ears) open for Snell, based on your evaluation. dennis -------------------- Can't you hear the thunder?

Wow, are those gorgeous.
Thanks, Elroy. The AR9s sounded pretty good without being refurbed, so I'm sure they will be outstanding when finished. Just need to get started... -------------------- Can't you hear the thunder?

Yup, the driver layout is similar except the ones I heard had inward firing woofers only. The pair in picture looks like it has outward woofers as well. |
