i did a four year hitch in the AF. not really what i would call serving my country, more like my country serving me.

That GYRO is awesome! I'd say the round black globe with the yellow cover may be a globe temperature componet from a Canadian WBGT meter. If yes, I believe the internals are three soldered copper filaments, making it very fragile.
