hey, all! i just picked this up for less than a buck at this monthly/bi-monthly rummage sale that we have been attending for a couple years now. it is a RADIO SHACK REALISTIC branded, german built ELAC MIRACORD 46. i've heard some good things about this table, and my auditioning experiences tend to concur. this is definitely the best sounding TT i have ever owned! plus, unlike the highly plasticized BSR 200BAX that it has replaced, it is built like a tank! all mechanical operations are smooth and solid, very precise. not bad at all for a 40 year old table!! i do believe i'll be sticking with this one until i find either a good PIONEER, (ideally the PL-90) or a comparably built japanese brand. at any rate, it's going to have to be something pretty special indeed to beat this sucker!!

It looks a very solid TT, also the walnut veneer base is very nice.
Nice find. Congrats.

nice find John. i think upgrading to a better source might be the most enjoyable upgrade as it gets one reacquainted with their music library.

oh, yes, forgot to mention; it is direct drive! i have heard bad things said about DD turntables, but judging by my experience so far with this one, i say poppycock!! this thing sounds BETTER than the belt driven BSR it has replaced! i detect no abnormalities, only pure Hi-Fi sound. i screwed the BSR's peg feet onto the bottom, and now the TT's chassis is better isolated from the platform it is upon. also, a footnote; this thing had no cartridge/stylus when i picked it up, but it accepts the same four lead, two screw slide on/off mounting system as the BSR, so the BSR's ADC VLM Mk.II cartridge/styli went on this ELAC. it's a nearly new styli, and the table is completely operationally sound, so it should easily last me until i find that dream PIONEER...

Nice find John. It still might be prudent to clean and relube the bearings. If I am understanding this is not a p-mount cartridge, it might also be worth checking for proper alignment as many people don't do this properly.

Have fun, enjoy the tunes.

Jim

it runs VERY smoothly! i figured it was high enough quality at first glance, and then, when i went to give the platter a manual spin for kicks, it SPUN, taking just about forever to finally wind down to a stop! i went ahead and lubed the mechanical joints and gearing with white lithium grease, so it's all good to go!
