I inherited a pair of Canadian loudspeakers called Avant circa late 70s. They're a classic 2 cuft box with a 12" woofer, 5" coated midrange and 1" tweeter mounted MTW with the tweeter offset. I had to refoam the woofers, no big deal. I bypassed the electrolytic caps with metallized polys and they sound great even by today's standards. I haven't been able to find out a thing about them, only from a Canadian dealer that they existed. Any info whatever would be appreciated.

After having struck out finding anything about them, I did another search and not only did I find a mention of them in a post, it was a post from 2004 from the previous owner! Here's pics of the one of the Avants, and another of the refoamed woofer, which is currently residing in my Dahlquist DQ-10. The rough edges are an extra layer of foam that I added to stabilize the lip that adheres to the cone and basket. The woofer in the Avant is a Goldwood that performs well in that box. The original from the Avant goes lower than the original Dahlquist/Advent with just as good or better transient response. It's also a paper cone that I coated. The ridge midway up the cone is where the original dust cover was.

They look cool!

I have a real sweet spot for "mystery speakers" like that.

Hi all, new to this forum. May soon purchase a pair of Avant 1AX speakers with Kef T27 tweeters and Kef x-overs, in very good shape and seller is asking $150. Can't seem to find any info on efficiency. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Gord
