I'm on nightshift this week so I've been trying to behave myself and stay awake fairly late. Tonight, however, I thought I'd have a couple of beers relatively early... something that in the past has been proven to bring on the zzzzzzzzs a bit earlier than I would prefer. I thought I would check CL one more time before cracking open a can (I don't drive after I've been drinking... even a little bit!) and stumbled across a rather generic ad for "speakers and sub". Took $100 cash with me and drove 45 minutes to Bothel, WA and brought home a pair of really nice M&K SX-4 "satellite speakers" and a matched VX-4 powered 10" sub, a little ratty on the grill but otherwise in very nice shape.

ALSO a Nady pro monitor and Carvin stand, a guitar stand, a pair of Yamaha two way bookshelf speakers (in great condition), a pair of wood speaker stands for the Yammys or M&Ks and a NAD 7140 stereo receiver in "like new" condition... which the seller didn't want (and didn't know anything about) and just threw in for free biggrin.gif

Photos and listening results coming soon!

EDIT: The NAD has a very strange issue which I'll move to another thread. It was free but man I wish I could get it to work right. It's my first NAD!!

Thanks!

Now I just have to decide, do I want to go M&K or AR? Or maybe keep my tried and true Carvers? Oh well, finding out the answer to that is half the fun, right?

Photos (click the thumbnail to see the larger version):

This first one I stole from an ebay ad of the exact same speakers because my camera wouldn't take a good shot of the crossover adjustment diagram... take a look at that, will ya?! I don't think I've seen too many speakers with that sort of setup. Sure wish I could find specs on these...

The NAD 7140. Soft clipping, selectable impedance (4 or 8 Ohm) and you can select to BRIDGE the A and B speaker channels! Pretty cool for a receiver.

i think thats the most elaborate design i've seen in a satellite speaker, very cool. have you been able to try them on both the hi and low efficiency connections to see what the difference in sound is? looks like they attempted to incorporate amp matching with that feature.

Yes I have but only on the NAD and at relatively low volumes (wife is sleeping! Shhhhh...) On it switching the "Efficiency" inputs doesn't seem to make much difference, at least at low volume. Switching the "Tweeter Level" seems to cut the dB noticeably but doesn't seem to affect the frequency range... similar I suppose to an L-pad that just raises/lowers the tweeter gain. Hope to get to try them on one of my Adcoms before I go to work this afternoon.

BTW so far I'm impressed with their sound. Very clear highs without sounding overly "bright" and a respectable amount of bass performance to boot. Of course I've only listened to them as NFM, about 4 feet from either side of my head while I'm typing at the computer, and again, at pretty low volume levels.

Decisions, decisions. Life is tough wink.gif . Those M&K are rather impressive looking and company carries quite a reputation.

A Nad receiver with a good low-noise MM/MC phono preamplifier for free...........? ohmy.gif
Don't be fooled by the 40W of power and the not very attractive cosmetics. Almost all Nad amps can deliever that amout of watts with loudspeakers of any impedance and with undistorted reproduction because of their patented "high-current output stage".
Congrats. soundt/thumbup.gif
